    It’s funny- I loved Black on Both Sides but I would always skip this song because I didn’t like the first 20 seconds or so of it. I figured that was the whole song. I know- hard to believe -because I loved the rest of the album. Then one day I just let the whole song play and went, WOW!

    Great song.

    Really though because blues -which influence country is definitely from african and native american influences. Just look at the jump from classical music to american music…..

    Back in the 50’s and earlier “Rock & Roll” was a term for “to have sex” used in the black communities.

    @Batman8657

    I know what you’re getting at but you chose the wrong rapper for that argument. Mos Def relies mostly on original hiphop producers and not much sampling. Also, samples have to be cleared through labels. Money is exchanged and credit is given. Unlike the heist of rock n Roll.

    vindictive yes, racist no.
    I thought it was unnecessary to go after people like the Rolling Stones by name even if what he says is true. Calling out Elvis is more legit because he was more the era of taking black rock & blues and making it friendly for white TV & radio

  11. Bendotizzle Says:

    the one fault on …
    the one fault on this album is when you play this song loud and the rock bit at the end suddenly smashed up ya speakers, im not against rock n roll or anything but to me that bits just annoyin

  12. illusciato Says:

    rock and roll was …
    rock and roll was def derived from mostly elements of african american music. but on this song he calls out ppl like the rollin stones and kenny g. for no reason. also, he wasnt around when presely was sellin records so why is he so hung up on this ?? song is def racist period. i still like alotta mos defs music but u cant deny this is pretty racist and vindictive for no reason.

  13. recognizethat Says:

    Nope, Black people …
    Nope, Black people invented Rock & Roll point blank. There’s no argument that there’s a little bit country influences in there, but for the most part rock & roll comes from the blues, doowop, R&B,… Black ppl were the first to combine all those genres together to form Rock & Roll. Do you even know the original meaning of Rock & Roll and where it comes from?

    I wonder how much …
    I wonder how much music Mos Def stole… sorry, “sampled” over his illustrious hip hop career. hypocrite.

    Rock and roll derived from equal parts blues and country music. That’s common knowledge to anyone with a brain. But don’t tell that to people like Mos Def. You’ll be branded a racist.

  16. deeewd Says:

    @MrRadioRage well, …
    @MrRadioRage well, they were influenced by blues, but rock’n'roll and rock music as such is very different from blues, and it just turned out so, that white musicians made it what it is. it’s just not right to bash them like that. I mean all respect to the blues artists, but blues is not rock’n'roll.

    well it’d be her fault as much as yours

    what i’m saying is
    the more we tolerate the less we fight
    some things shouldn’t be tolerated, like hurting or hating.
