Does the Roll make any difference?
I think there is a difference in that Rock is a sub genre of Rock and Roll.
You have so many subs that run off from Rock music …
Soft Rock, Folk Rock, Jazz Rock, Hard Rock, soft rock, glam rock, heavy metal, progressive rock, and Punk rock. New Wave Rock, and alternative rock.
I am not sure that the Roll actually made a difference but I think it was a more confined genre, Rock has a lot of branches that come off of that trunk, known as Rock and Roll.

No, there is no real difference. Rock is more commonly used. Rock-n-Roll was more commonly used in the 1950’s and 60’s… when everyone looked like Buddy Holly. ^_^

Great question… I’ve heard the term rock music being used both ways, as synonymous with rock and roll or as a later genre or sub-genre… personally, I tend to think the roll does make a difference, though I couldn’t exactly say what it is… string bass, piano and /or saxophone? … boogie-woogie rhythm? … plain fun?
Was it the emasculation of the roll that made rock become self-important, predictable and flat?
I really don’t know, so I’ll keep checking those answers for some enlightenment.

I don’t actually know if there is a real difference but I see rock and roll as the older stuff like Elvis , Jerry Lee Lewis , Buddy Holly etc . It sounds different then rock . I think the beatles and the rolling stones sang kind of introduced rock music . It is more electric guitarish then rock and roll .Personally , I prefer the more old fashioned rock and rock and roll ( rockabilly) sound but I also love rock . I dont think there are any bands that still sing rock and roll . It has all changed to rock
