Now I don’t mean the deadly obvious ones like "Jonas brothers being Rock" or rubbish like that, I want the "controversial" ones, the ones that on a normal day might get Thumb Downed by the average R&P user.
A few of mine:
The best Bowie album: Unlike most of the Tools who seem to say "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust,"
I on the other will say that Station to Station is the best. It is one of those albums that you have to really listen to, notice the pain being brought out.
Grunge: Most people here seem to find it glorious, I on the other hand think it is boring and weak. It seems to lack energy and substance in my books.
The best rock artists die young: Sure, some greats went early, but just cause you pushed the daisies before the wrinkles set in doesn’t make you a god. Many a great is still living, Bowie, Bryan Ferry and Ian McCulloch to name a few proove this.
Hip-hop is talentless rubbish: No it is not, it takes as much of a genius to come up with a clever sample as it does to make a melody, and just cause it’s not "singing" doesn’t mean it shows less emotion.
that tool up there obviously never saw a dead show.
that chuck berry is not one of the greatest guitarists to come along…everyone that came after him has had to step through the chuck berry door.

I disagree that you have to "look" a certain way to be rock.
I disagree that Jimi hendrix is/was one of the best guitarists ever
I disagree with people who think the beatles are the best band of all time
I disagree with most music stero types

For starters, that Angus and his buddies aren’t bluesmen.
See, problem is, the economists behind them (for better or other)
decided they be packaged as they are, instead of going
down a rootier road. But hey, if you have that kind of
energy, why not go for rockin’ nonetheless? After all,
it ain’t no fun not bein’ a millionaire.
Also: It was Jimmy Page’s OPINION–thus, decision–to not do every
bl00dy thing in his power to go after Jack White to be exclusive vocalist
for the Zeppelin’s potential "reunioned" WorldTour of current day.
The Stripes are on hold ’til Meg recovers [?], and I’m guessing that
the Raconteurs would just have to tuff it out–I mean, surely Jack
would pounce on the offer.
Note: I’d asked in this Category about this very thing a month ago.
I still canNOT believe it was never brought to Jimmy to consider Jack.
I mean, they seriously were talking with Steven Tyler?
Get me not wrong. When Steven’s "on," he’s Steven.
Great! But, um, yeahhhh…he isn’t gonna do any more
proper for a Zeppelin-necessary vocal fest On World Tour
than the honorable Robert knows he himself can’t, and this
is coming from an absolute Zeppeholic.
Or if not Jack White, why not Chris Robinson?

Ha, I agree, Station To Station is probably in my top four Bowie albums (TVC-15 lowers its GPA)
Drums solos are not worthwhile.
A live version twice as long as the studio version is not a good thing.
Albums rock journo’s have namechecked as great, that aren’t:
Love’s Forever changes
Spirit’s Twelve dreams of Dr. Sardonicus
Anything by the Greatful Dead
Carlos Santana is not a great guitarist (if I can tell he’s playing on any track the first time I hear it isn’t he just ploughing the same furrow over and over?)
There is no such thing as universally ‘good music’.
If a great rock band from our era went back in time they’d blow everyone’s minds. Sorry, music’s development and its audience are in a constant and evolving feedback loop – out of context music doesn’t work.
Guitar bands are on the way out (actually a Decca record exec said that in the early 60s when deciding not to sign the Beatles).
Music can’t change the world, but it can change yours.

The Sex Pistols are a great punk band/ started punk rock.
I don’t know how many times I’ve read that on questions/answers here. The Sex Pistols were nothing more than a "project" put together by Malcolm McClaren to cash in on the Punk craze of that time. They were a 70’s equivalent of a boy-band. They got attention, thanks to McClaren’s promotion and their "rowdy" television interviews. Everything about them was preplanned, packaged to make them look "controversial". The only thing they ever did that wasn’t planned in advance was break up.
And anybody with half a brain knows they started nothing. The Ramones were the main inspiration for putting the Pistols together. The Stooges, Mc5, Frankenstein(early incarnation of the Dead Boys), Television, and many more (and more talented) bands were around years before the Sex Pistols. The term "Punk" was thrown around in the New York scene WAY before the Pistols were around.
Sorry for the long rant, but I think the Sex Pistols are one of the most overrated bands in music history.

Definitely agree with thesnuffpunk.
I think the Sex Pistols are overrated and they are rubbish. they couldn’t play their instruments at all.
I’m not very fond of guitar solos even though I play guitar. People seem to think there is something cool about them but I was never impressed by them.
I don’t like Bauhaus. People say how great they are but they make me feel bad and anxious and that’s why I don’t like them.

Rock music died with the 80s.
No, it really didn’t. The people that say that don’t stray away from the radio dial. The music of the 2000s is just as good as music decades ago if you actually look for something you like. The days of good music being spoonfed to us is over.

All good rock was before Nirvana, everything else is emo: ignorant opinion…most of the best of rock came in the 90s. The 80s’ had more "trash" comparable to most of modern post-grunge/pop punk today.

First off, I absolutely agree with you on the hip-hop debate. It definitely takes skill to sample a record, lay down a beat, put out some slick rhymes….yeah, there’s some garbage out there but there’s a whole lot of garbage in the rock and pop scene. If you get to the root of the matter, there’s a lot of artists baring their heart and soul for their audiences and craft. And to me, that’s the basis of all music.
Also already mentioned, people saying The Sex Pistols were a great band. Come on, Malcom McLarren DID assemble the group in the boy-band fashion. He even got rid of Glen Matlock who wrote most of the band’s material for that talentless hack Sid Vicious because he "looked the part". Great marketing ploy, absolutely, but great band, sadly no.
That punk is dead. Punk is an idealism, not a fashionshow. Yeah, most of the bands that are released through the majors aren’t punk. I consider Rise Against a pretty dull band. But the concept is out there and alive and well. It can’t be embraced by MTV or marketed and sold at Hop Topic or by getting a crappy piercing on your lip. It also can’t be bundled into one pretty package that resembales a particular sound. But it’s alive and well on the streets of America, embraced by those who show a DIY ethic.
And that there’s no good music being put out today. I’ve stated this several times in R&P, this era provides as many good bands as there ever were due to the distribution we have today, particularly the internet. There’s tons of bands uploading info that will probably never be heard by the majority of the participants in this room. And for every one of them, there’s more kids just playing in a garage somewhere or laying down lyrics on a street somewhere. And they do it for the love of the music. Those should be the real heros in the music society.

I disagree that you have to either be a fan of rock or of hip hop. I’ve been playing guitar since I was 13 or 14 (20 now), and love to play, write, jam to all sorts of rock music. From metal to indie rock. But I also love hip hop.
True music fans cross genre borders!
EDIT: I also agree on the style thing. You don’t need to dress or have a certain style to be a fan of some type of music.

The Beatles are the greatest Band ever.
Eddie Vedder is a great vocalist
Radiohead is the greatest modern Band
All modern Music sucks
Heavy Metal is all Devil Music
Bruce Springsteen is the greatest American Singer
The Grunge 90’s are better than the Hair Metal 80’s
Keith Moon is the greatest Drummer ever.
Jimi Hendrix is a talented Vocalist.

Yes i totally agree with you on that hip-hop thing.
Some of what i disagree is that
1. Led Zeppelin is not greatest hard rock band ever, its overrated, there are more talented people than them.
2. Bob Dylan, i dont know what is soo special or unique in him?
3. That mostly whenever there is an article about grunge music, they just credit these 3 band and in this order; Nirvana, Pearl jam and Alice in Chains, the main pioneers are not mostly credited like Mudhoney or Soundgarden.
Mostly these crap is said all those crappy review, magazines, MTV and all that.
Actually, never believe the magazines like Rolling Stone or MTV and all that crap, it doesnt mean that if Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by the Beatles is said the best album by Rolling Stone, it is…just live by you, live by what you like.
