My husband and I always ask people we know this very question. There are varying answers and some down right dumb answers. He and I both love the rock music of the early era, like the 60s and 70s maybe even early 80s, what we call the "real" rock music. So, can anyone please answer my question. My husband and I are still on our quest to find the greatest rock-n-roll song ever written.

Valdy – Rock And Roll Song
Issued in Canada October 1972 on Haida 101. From the LP “Country Man” on Haida HL-5101. Produced by Claire Lawrence (of Chilliwack).
Valdy (Valdemar Horsdal) is a Canadian music legend. He is first and foremost a folk singer, and has built a solid, worldwide following over the years with his intimate, gentle songs. One of his experiences, being booed at an early concert where he was mis-booked with loud rock bands, led to this record, which is pretty much his only “rock and roll song.” A&M Records took him to Los Angeles to make his first album, on which the great Jim Gordon plays drums. He recut this song at one point, and for quite awhile, that was the only version that got any airplay. This is the original version that you remember.
Valdy has won two Juno awards and seven further nominations, and amassed sales of a half-million records to date. He is still performing.
Elsewhere on Youtube, there is an absolutely charming clip of him performing this song solo in an instructional video. Go look it up!

Please and Thank you. ![]()
I’m gonna answer as best I can, and they may not stick to your genre preferences entirely, but a few more suggestions can never hurt, right?
"The Judge’s Daughter" by Green Day. Now I know a lot of people hear Green Day and immediately are turned off, but trust me, this song’s great. It’s off their first album and it’s a real gem of a song amongst the "want her but can’t have her" tunes.
"Rose of Sharyn" by Killswitch Engage. This song’s amazing in every way. It was my first Killswitch song, and I’ve loved that band to this day. It’s true meaning isn’t entirely clear, but it’s simple enough to see it’s about loving a girl that you can’t have. It’s heavy metal, but Howard Jones is an insane screamer, and you’ll probably enjoy it.
"Whispers" by All That Remains. Again, another metal band with an insane screamer. This song is about being in love someone who haunts you and won’t leave your mind no matter how much you wish they would. Might not fit your situation clearly, but I don’t know what’s going on. It’s a good song either way, check it out.
"The Lost Souls" by AFI. Yet another one of those bands most people hate as soon as they hear the name. But this is a good song about following someone no matter what, and it gives off the whole vibe of "You know we’re gonna end up together, why fight it?" It’s a bit more on the aggressive side of your situation.
"Lindsay Quit Lollygagging" by Chiodos. Probably one of the best love songs of all time. This song’s about being in love, and saying "I love you, no matter what." It’s about being able to be completely broken from not being with someone, but still finding light in the fact that they’re happy wherever they are.
"Little Motel" by Modest Mouse. Ever heard the expression ‘Absence makes the heart grow fonder?’ Well, that pretty much sums up this song. It’s about being away from someone and missing them and just wishing you could be with them again. It’s more of an ‘after a fight’ song, but really, it could fit either situation depending on how you go about hearing it.
"Dig Up Her Bones" by the Misfits. I know you’re probably thinking ‘Why am I seeing a horrorpunk band?’ But really, this song is very sweet. It’s about following a girl to any lengths just to see her face. Even if it means defiling the grave to see her one last time. I know, it’s weird, but you gotta admit it touches your heart in all the darkest places.
That’s all I can think of right off, I hope it helps!
