Poll> Would you rather listen to Old Time Rock and Roll or the current Top 40?

Posted by admin on April 7th, 2010 and filed under rock and roll hits | 10 Comments »

I know in which camp I fall. In which do you fall, Old Time Rockin’ or current hits?

Thanks, and rock on!
Doofus, that means you like the current top 40? Your name is quite appropriate then!

Old Time Rock and Roll of course…and I am only 24!
The current Top 40 is horrific. Music has either been frozen to a halt, or there is severe lack of talent these days. We need a good decent band to come along and break the circle.

Rock ‘n Roll Boogie

Posted by admin on April 6th, 2010 and filed under rock and roll hits | 17 Comments »

This clip is the opening of the Alan Freed promotional film ‘Rock Rock Rock’ of 1956 in which Freed bills himself as “King of Rock ‘n Roll”. Dictator? ….. maybe.
Consider 50’s Rock ‘n Roll as a commercial venture. Alan Freed saw an opportunity in the enthusiasm for black R ‘n B shown by a white teen audience, an emerging social group with spending power in the post WW2 boom.

Noticed the eyes of the tenor players which speak volumes. There is a look of apprehension as the song begins. They don’t appear to be enjoying this experience.

Note Freed’s “singing”. He is hopeless. He doesn’t even put the phrases in the right places. He sounds as if he is repeating something he has heard but doesn’t quite understand. But this is his project and he put it out so I guess he thought that his performance was fine. The band rocks but the situation has a smell of contrivance and exploitation.

Freed was credited with co-writing 15 rock ‘n roll hits including “Maybellene” by Chuck Berry. How does that happen?

Freed was eventually convicted of payolla, the corrupt acceptance of money to push musical product that would not otherwise have been considered. (wouldn’t happen today. {;–) ) Anyway, all was forgiven and Freed was among the original inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland in 1986 and in 1991 received a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame in 1991.

Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame?

Posted by admin on April 5th, 2010 and filed under rock and roll hits | 2 Comments »

There are a number of performers with many #1 hits not in the so called rock and roll Hall Of Fame. Their web sit does not explain the process, criteria or who does the voting or nominating. Does anybody know what the process is? Who actually runs the show? How to contact any of the people in charge of nominations?

the very concept of a rock and roll hall of fame is lame.

I Love Rock N Roll (Guitar Hero Smash Hits Expert Drums FC Sightread)

Posted by admin on April 3rd, 2010 and filed under rock and roll hits | 25 Comments »

First things first. I know I’m not the best Rock Band/Guitar Hero drummer in the world and I’m not trying to be. I’m just uploading my videos for friends and family to view so please leave the “you suck” comments at the door.

Having said that, I just bought a Hauppauge HD PVR and I was really itching to try it out. Most, if not all, of the videos that I’ll be uploading will be in HD.

Some people will have problems viewing videos in HD due to older/slower computers. If the videos seem to be choppy or laggy then this is most likely your problem.

Some of the common questions I’m expecting to get are:

Question: What type of drum kit are you using?
Answer: I’m using an ION Drum Rocker.

Question: What type of bass pedal are you using?
Answer: I’m using a DW 7002 double bass pedal with a Roland KD-8 kick trigger and a kickbox.

Question: Do you play real drums?
Answer: No. I’ve never touched a set of drums in my life until I started playing Rock Band.

Question: How did you get a gold drum icon
Answer: You get a gold icon for finishing the ESL (Endless Set List) on hard. You get a platinum for finishing expert and an inverted icon for finishing on medium.

Question: Which system do you play on?
Answer: I play Rock Band on my 360, however, I do own a PS3 too.

Question: What’s your gamer tag?
Answer: Whetzel (on both systems)

Thanks for watching and if you would like to you can subscribe because I plan on uploading more videos as I get time. Some videos will be FC’s, some will be Gold Stars and some will probably suck. :)

Kay Starr – Rock and Roll Waltz

PLEASE NOTE: I divided my uploads between multiple channels, Bookmark this link in your browser for instant access to an index with links to all of John1948’s oldies classics. LINK: http://jeb1948.blogspot.com/

A solid jazz singer whose early recordings tended to be forgotten after her ascendancy into the commercial sphere during the mid-’50s, Kay Starr was among the first pop singer to capitalize on the “rock fad” with her 1955 novelty “Rock and Roll Waltz.” Her biggest hit came with the era-defining “Wheel of Fortune,” a prime slice of ’50s adult pop with a suitably brassy reading. Born in Oklahoma, she moved to Dallas at a young age and made her debut on radio while still in school. A brief stay with Glenn Miller & His Orchestra precipitated her working with groups led by Bob Crosby, Joe Venuti and finally Charlie Barnet. She recorded a few numbers with Barnet that earned her a solo contract with Capitol.

By 1948, Starr made her Your Hit Parade breakthrough with “You Were Only Foolin’ (While I Was Falling in Love).” Subsequent hits like “Hoop-Dee-Doo,” “Oh, Babe!” and “I’ll Never Be Free” (the latter with Tennessee Ernie Ford) framed her in an emerging vein of the popular market that also looked back to traditional country and folk. In 1952, “Wheel of Fortune” became her biggest hit and one of the signature songs of the ’50s pop sound. She struggled to reach a similar chart peak for several years afterwards, though “Comes A-Long A-Love” topped the British charts. With her move to RCA in 1955, though the comical “Rock and Roll Waltz” spent several weeks at number one. It was her last major hit, followed by just one additional Top Ten entry, 1957’s “My Heart Reminds Me.” By the 1960s, she had begun to concentrate more on performing (especially in Las Vegas) than recording, despite moving back to Capitol in 1961. In the ’90s, she played several oldies packages, including the 3 Girls 3 tour with Helen O’Connell and Margaret Whiting. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide

In terms of chart success, his ten biggest hits were (in order):

Don’t Be Cruel
Hound Dog
All Shook Up
Heartbreak Hotel
Jailhouse Rock
(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear
Are You Lonesome To-Night?
Love Me Tender
It’s Now or Never
Don’t

Personally, I’m more of a "Marie’s the Name (His Latest Flame)" and "It’s a Matter of Time" person.
