Now I don’t mean the deadly obvious ones like "Jonas brothers being Rock" or rubbish like that, I want the "controversial" ones, the ones that on a normal day might get Thumb Downed by the average R&P user.
A few of mine:
The best Bowie album: Unlike most of the Tools who seem to say "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust,"
I on the other will say that Station to Station is the best. It is one of those albums that you have to really listen to, notice the pain being brought out.
Grunge: Most people here seem to find it glorious, I on the other hand think it is boring and weak. It seems to lack energy and substance in my books.
The best rock artists die young: Sure, some greats went early, but just cause you pushed the daisies before the wrinkles set in doesn’t make you a god. Many a great is still living, Bowie, Bryan Ferry and Ian McCulloch to name a few proove this.
Hip-hop is talentless rubbish: No it is not, it takes as much of a genius to come up with a clever sample as it does to make a melody, and just cause it’s not "singing" doesn’t mean it shows less emotion.
that tool up there obviously never saw a dead show.
that chuck berry is not one of the greatest guitarists to come along…everyone that came after him has had to step through the chuck berry door.
I know that it is group of people involved in music but I want to know specifically who was responsible for the decisions.
An A$$hole named Jann Wenner who believes Bands like The Monkees and Rush do not deserve too be inducted….
A trailer from the upcoming documentary on psychedelic rock pioneers “Os Mutantes”.
The story of Os Mutantes is perhaps one of the strangest in the entire history of rock music, and has served as heady inspiration for artists as varied as David Byrne, Beck, Sean Lennon, and Nirvana. Imagine a 1960’s Brazilian rock band on a weekly television program disguised as aliens, witches, or conquist-adors performing surreal hymns to such bizarre figures as Don Quixote (or at other times: Genghis Khan and Lucifer) while tossing massive nets and giant rubber caterpillars across their audience. Add the fact that they had the courage to perform a fusion of traditional Brazilian rhythms with psychedelia at a time when the “MPB” (the Brazilian music establishment) were openly hostile to the wild sounds of American rock ‘n roll and this provoked even further outrage by fashioning their own outrageous musical instruments, often constructed out of such common household objects as rubber hoses, cans of hot chocolate, or bottles of bug spray. Finally, they did all of this under the watchful eyes of a brutally repressive right-wing military dictatorship, as they were regularly censored by the government while performing alongside such musical revolutionaries as Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso (who, like many artists in Brazil at the time, were imprisoned and exiled for their political stance).

All I ever hear these days is whining about Madonna and Run-D.M.C. getting inducted. "Oh no," people complain, "the hall of fame has rejected its rock and roll roots!" Well, the way I see it, there are currently 164 artists inducted (It’s the way I see it because I might have miscounted, but it’s around there.) Out of those they have inducted 58 that cannot be considered rock, being these 58:
James Brown
Ray Charles
Sam Cooke
Fats Domino
Aretha Franklin
Marvin Gaye
B.B. King
Clyde McPhatter
Smokey Robinson
Big Joe Turner
Muddy Waters
Jackie Wilson
The Drifters
The Supremes
Dion
Otis Redding
The Temptations
Stevie Wonder
Hank Ballard
The Four Tops
The Platters
LaVern Baker
John Lee Hooker
The Impressions
Wilson Pickett
Jimmy Reed
Ike & Tina Turner
Bobby "Blue" Bland
Booker T and the M.G.s
Johnny Cash
The Isley Brothers
Sam & Dave
Ruth Brown
Etta James
Sly and the Family Stone
Bob Marley
Al Green
Martha and the Vandellas
Gladys Knight and the Pips
Little Willie John
The Shirelles
The Jackson 5
Parliament-Funkadelic
Curtis Mayfield
The Staple Singers
Earth, Wind and Fire
The Moonglows
Solomon Burke
The Flamingos
Isaac Hayes
The Dells
The O’Jays
Percy Sledge
Miles Davis
Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five
Little Anthony and the Imperials
Run-D.M.C.
Bobby Womack
That means that over a third of the members are not rock musicians. Furthermore, of the original ten members inducted in ‘86, four (the first four on the list) are not rock musicians. The museum should just change its name to the pop music hall of fame and get it over with.
Thoughts?
I don’t quite understand, guitar god. You say anything that isn’t rock is a subgenre of rock, which I would take to mean that blues, folk, rap, yada yada yada are all subgenres of rock. But then you say that rock is a subgenre of other genres. I don’t understand.
I think Jay’s right, it all comes down to semantics. I think the root of the problem is that the Hall of Fame (I assume you mean the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame) hasn’t given a clear definition on what they consider to be "rock and roll". Even so, I don’t think the Foundation ever actually specifies that the inductee’s work has to be considered rock, only that they have had an impact:
"One of the Foundation’s many functions is to recognize the contributions of those who have had a significant impact on the evolution, development and perpetuation of rock and roll by inducting them into the Hall of Fame."
Yes they could change the name, but it has such a nice ring to it as is.
I enjoy everything from Alternative Rock to Old Time Rock and Roll to Heavy Metal to Hardcore.
Lots of them, but I recommend Rollingstones web site, because they try very hard to be up to date!

If you’re going to write-in a candidate, they must qualify: "influence and significance to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll." Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record.
Jiff: Metallica is already in the RnR HOF.

Congratulations to Abba for their induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2010! This rocking song is very suitable to celebrate this recognition!
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (RRHOF) Foundation announced on December 15 that ABBA, Genesis, Jimmy Cliff, The Hollies and The Stooges are its 2010 artist inductees. The original list of nominees were: ABBA, Darlene Love, Donna Summer, Genesis, Jimmy Cliff, KISS, Laura Nyro, LL Cool J, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Chantels, The Hollies and The Stooges.
The induction ceremony will take place on March 15 2010 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City and will air live on Fuse, Madison Square Gardens national music television network. The 2010 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame performer inductees were chosen by more than 500 voters of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. Artists are eligible for inclusion in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25 years after their first recording is released. All inductees are ultimately represented in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum on the shores of Lake Erie in downtown Cleveland, Ohio in USA.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame honours the legendary performers, producers, songwriters, disc jockeys and others who have made rock and roll the force that it is in our culture. For over two decades the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation has been nominating and electing those figures and honoring them at an annual ceremony that has become one of the most celebrated events of the year. Once inducted the artists are further honoured when they are featured in the Museum’s Hall of Fame exhibit, which includes a computerized jukebox containing virtually every song of every performer inductee; etched-glass signatures of the inductees; a film on three huge screens recounting their careers and music; and a display of artifacts from the current year’s inductees.
See http://www.rockhall.com/induction2010/ for further info and the list of 164 past inductees.
There has also been an online petition to support the case for the inclusion of Abba in the RRHOF, which now has 3764 signatures.
Abba visited Bremen in West Germany for 2 days in late January 1976 to record the 45 minute German tv show “The Best Of Abba”, which was broadcast there on August 21 1976. This show was first screened on North German regional channel NDR on March 31 1976. Director and producer Michael Leckebusch remembers “The four Swedes had two free days in their timetable and came to Bremen. They knew about my work, so there was no problem in getting them. There was no question of finance either since the entire show cost DM 6,000. It was a pleasure to work with them. They were calm, friendly, co-operative and very professional. We had to record 10 songs in two days. We added SOS (performed ‘live’ in August 1975) because of time constraints. The programme was broadcast in more than 30 countries.” The songs performed were: Waterloo, Honey Honey, Tropical Loveland, SOS (recorded in 1975), Rock Me (this video), Dancing Queen, Mamma Mia, I’ve Been Waiting For You, Fernando and So Long. There were four brief interviews with the group between the songs.
Rock Me was recorded on October 21 1974. It was released on April 21 1975 as the B-side of “I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do” and on their third album “Abba”. The working titles were “Didn’t I” and “Baby”. An excerpt of “Baby” with lead vocal by Agnetha can be found on “Abba Undeleted”. After “I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do” hit number 1 in both Australia and New Zealand in July 1975 it was flipped and “Rock Me” was released as the A-side following their very successful Australian tour in March 1976, reaching #4 and #2 respectively. It was also released as an A-side in Yugoslavia.

i listen to rock and roll and southern rock and certain blues. ex,allman brothers, steve miller, jackyl, iron maiden, alice cooper, just to name a few, a wide range of rock, plz no death metal or rap cuz i dont care how many times 50cent got shot in the head.lol, if its classic rock i probably allready heard it so keep your answers to overlooked clasic rock artists or semi-modern music but no red jumpsuit whatever, or green day or crappy bands like that. thanks ahead of time
I also like classic rock, southern rock, etc…
Some bands/singers I like:
The Who (My Favorite band)
Oasis
Jim Byrnes (Blues)
The Small Faces/The Faces
Anthony Stewart Head (he has 1 album out)
Foy Vance
Simon Townshend
Note: If you like The Who you should try Pete Townshend’s and John Entwistle’s solo work. Roger Daltrey’s solo work is also good, but it’s leans more towards Pop than Rock.
