R&P: Name an original and a cover song you like?

Posted by admin on April 21st, 2010 and filed under beatles rock and roll | 17 Comments »

And tell me which one you prefer if you like. The Beatles version I prefer because John Lennon had a great Rock voice.

Chuck Berry – Rock and Roll Music

The Beatles – Rock and Roll Music

Beni

The Beatles cover of "You Really Got A Hold On Me" is one of my favourite songs of all time. George Harrison and John Lennon on harmony was great. And yeah John sang the hell out ofit.

Kylie Minogue – "Confide In Me" (1994) (don’t judge on name alone if you haven’t heard it yet, try the first 30 seconds or so)

Angtoria – "Confide In Me" (2006)

I love both versions, can’t decide which is better. Depends on my mood though, which I want to listen to at the time. :p

Joe blows them away with his feeling for the song

even the Beatles said Cocker did a better job of the song.

    Paul Anka’s version

I have a rough time deciding. Paul Anka’s version is amazing in the way that it’s so smooth, but Billy Idol’s feels so emotional that it gives me the chills. I still haven’t decided which one I prefer.

    Song: Feeling Good

Original: Gilbert Price, Original B’Way Cast, Roar of the Greasepaint-the Smell of the Crowd
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Djs5DzaHK7c

    Cover: Nina Simone
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJA69C6SlRk

    Cover: Muse
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJA69C6SlRk

I love that song, in general, and all of the artists mentioned above sound amazing. For my favorite out of them, I would have to say… Muse. But only by a hair over Nina Simone. I like the raw, edgy feel of Muse’s take on it, and Matt Bellamy’s vocals are brilliant. Although Nina Simone had a phenomenal voice, that caught your attention, very deep and emotional. But Gilbert Price was extremely good on the original, as any Broadway star should be.

These artists are all amazing, in my opinion, and the song matches them. The original has a lot of emotion, and it’s a happy one, but it’s happy in an ironic way with the music, if you understand what I mean. All of the artists are just sensational and do the song great justice, though.

    Bruce Hornsby & the Noisemakers – Jacob’s Ladder: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xeI6qfc_BII

Bruce Hornsby originally wrote the song, so I guess his is the original. My first time listening to it, I thought it was actually pretty cool. But Huey Lewis and the News just completely own the song, I was actually listening to it when I saw this question. Another good cover song and the original:

Jet Airliner – Steve Miller Band: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyQ1znMc3og

Jet Airliner – Paul Pena: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cjr5U7g6aiA

I’ve always loved the Steve Miller Band version (possibly my favorite song by them), and I didn’t even know it was a cover until recently. My first listen of Paul Pena’s version, and damn, this version is amazing as well. It’s almost a virtual tie, but I gotta go with the Steve Miller Band version, because I absolutely love the guitar riff, and, when coupled with Threshold (an instrumental that usually comes before Jet Airliner), the song just becomes that much more awesome. I gotta go listen to some more of Paul Pena’s stuff now.

I prefer the Hot Tuna version, it’s more upbeat and seems to flow better, but I love the original too. You can’t beat those lyrics for shock value. For some reason I envision those older days being more of a clean mouthed time. :)
