Who were the influences of The Beatles (classical and blues/rock n roll)?

Posted by admin on February 26th, 2010 and filed under beatles rock and roll | 3 Comments »

I wanted to ask if anyone knew specific artist names or songs that influenced The Beatles sound.

I know for a fact that Paul and John were both influenced heavily by classical musical because their songs have bits and pieces of them and also they’ve sited composers like Bach (for Blackbird).

So I was just wondering if we can compose a list of all the known influences of The Beatles to better understand why this band was so amazing.

Thanks everyone.

Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Buddy Holly, and Chuck Berry.

Rock n Roll Songs, got any?

Posted by admin on February 26th, 2010 and filed under rock and roll hits | 3 Comments »

I’m really into The Answer at the moment (currently supporting AC/DC) and bands like Black Stone Cherry, Shinedown, etc. Really want to build up a playlist of hard hitting Rock n Roll Songs, got a bit of Led Zep in there too. Any suggestions would be great.
By the ways I like everything from the 60’s until today so go crazy, just as long as it’s hard and you can head bang to it!
Actually ignore the head banging bit, probably does limit some very good songs i.e. Free – All Right Now, Sabbath etc

Hmm certainly limited the list with the head banging, here’s some off the top of my head.

Black Sabbath
Dio
Alice Cooper
Ozzy Osbourne
Danzig
Turbonegro
Van Halen

If you hadn’t said head banging, that would be a much more fruitful list, but those are still some damn good bands!

EDIT: Now I have no restriction of what bands to recommend, here’s where I really kick in.

The Rolling Stones
Jethro Tull
The Allman Brothers Band
The Doors
Grateful Dead
Janis Joplin
Aerosmith
Johnny Thunders
New York Dolls
Thin Lizzy
Jimi Hendrix
Jerry Garcia
I’ll stop here because I don’t know how many characters I have left for this edit.

Can you give me the name of a 1970’s rock song that fits the following details?

Posted by admin on February 26th, 2010 and filed under rock and roll song | 5 Comments »

It’s a 70’s rock and roll song where they quickly give a sing a bunch of stuff … I believe is a bunch of things from TV shows. I know that’s not a lot to go on. I heard it recently on the radio and I missed the name and the artist.

"We Didn’t Start The Fire" by Billy Joel?

Can someone please help me understand Rock ‘n’ Roll singing history?

Any suggestions for easy Rock & Roll songs to sing (and learn) while playing electric bass?

Posted by admin on February 26th, 2010 and filed under rock and roll songs | 4 Comments »

Playing electric guitar and singing don’t seem to be a problem – but when I’m playing electric bass I cannot sing a lot of songs. It seems that a lot of times bass playing counters what’s being sung or comes in timing that just doesn’t mesh with singing. Songs like "Stray Cat Strut" with an even beat and the words sung on each beat are fairly easy to sing and play bass on at the same time. Do you have any suggestions for other Rock & Roll songs that I can learn to sing and play bass at the same time? Thanks.

Try The Cars, which I found easy. Pink Floyd – Run Like Hell is easy. Punk like Sex Pistols or Ramones. Try something where the bass has a steady pace, quarter notes or 8th notes. You might even want to try to keep up with the changes on the bass without playing the counter just to learn the song. Once you have the lyrics down or the bass line down then learn the other part. I had to do that with Another Brick on the Wall.

What were the flaws in society that caused young people to break away from conformity and turn to rock & roll?

Posted by admin on February 26th, 2010 and filed under rock and roll | 1 Comment »

This is referring to the the youth of the 1950s+. I have always wondered why society was so bad in their eyes that they became rebels and turned to drugs and rock an roll. (Not that there is anything wrong with rock and roll, i’m just curious)
- to themojoman – you did not answer the question. Don’t waste my time. This question is about rock and roll not drugs.

Before ROCK & ROLL the music was all BROADWAY MUSICAL STUFF and a young person couldn’t identify with it. I mean WHO CAN’T IDENTIFY with something like SWEET LITTLE SIXTEEN or ROCKET 88 or LITTLE GTO ETC ETC who could identify with say FRANK SINATRA singing in a suit and tie or TONY BENNETT. NOT EVERYONE WHO LOVES R&R "TURNED TO DRUGS".

is good rock and roll music dead???

i think it’s rough that there isn’t much rock music on mainstream tv and radio……

kids now are listening to metallica and guns and roses, and it’s really weird.
one of the only rock bands doing anything is green day, and they’re amazingly popular, but they’re not really all that good.

personally, i like a few rock bands like metric, the libertines, and the hives, but none of them are very popular.

i say all this because at some point kids might be listening to what their parents were listening to, and that’s just wrong and we can’t have that.

Your question sounds thought out, but I don’t get your last paragraph. Do you really think the popular music of today is better or smarter than music from the past? (Perhaps you are young). Kids listening to classic rock or music from the past have simply discovered the better stuff. They are bored with today’s silliness. Where do you think today’s best performers get their influence from? (The performers who get their influence from each other sound the silliest, and will be forgotten.)

There IS good music today, but it is not the majority. A great deal of today’s pop/rock/rap will NOT be enjoying continued airplay 30-plus years from now because it is the musical equivalent of junk food. Not meaning to offend any fans of today’s popular music, but look back later and the truth will be revealed.

As for "that’s just wrong",..listen to some of what you hear today. Some stuff is so ugly and so silly that they would have been called "novelty songs" (jokes) in the past (when singers could also write,.. and could play their own musical instruments without the aid of studio tricks and computer software).

Ultimately, taste is individual. If it moves you, enjoy it. If it’s really dumb, enjoy the music and take the lyrics very lightly.

P.S. "Gillian", below, is right about the flock thing. Many tend to like what they are "supposed" to like.
